Live-Action ‘Moana’ Underperforms in Global Box Office Debut

Date:

Disney’s latest live-action offering, Moana, has claimed the top spot at the North American box office during its debut weekend, although it didn’t quite meet financial expectations. The film, which stars Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as Maui and introduces Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana, garnered $43 million in the U.S. and Canada. Internationally, it added another $52 million, totaling a global opening of $95 million against its substantial production budget of $250 million.

Directed by Thomas Kail, the movie has sparked debate among critics and audiences alike. While Lagaʻaia’s portrayal of Moana has been widely applauded, the film has faced criticism for adhering too closely to the narrative of the 2016 animated version. Despite this, audience surveys show a more favorable reaction, particularly among families, many of whom are recommending the film.

Disney has seen mixed results with its live-action adaptations in recent years, with some achieving significant commercial success while others have faltered. Moana’s initial box office performance is drawing comparisons to the modest debut of Snow White. Industry experts suggest that the film’s opening numbers may have been affected by strong competition from other family-oriented films released around the same time.

Despite a lukewarm start, analysts remain optimistic about Moana’s future box office prospects. Family films often enjoy prolonged success due to positive word-of-mouth, which can sustain their performance in subsequent weeks. With a 34% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has resonated more with audiences, possibly paving the way for a steady presence in theaters.
