Taiwan Urgently Requests Ongoing US Military Aid Due to China Tensions

Date:

Amid escalating military pressure from China, Taiwan is urging the continuation of U.S. arms sales to bolster its self-defense capabilities, according to its representative in Washington, Alexander Yui. He underscored the significance of these sales in light of the increased defense spending by Taiwan, which is committed to enhancing its ability to address potential security threats independently. Yui highlighted the necessity for Taiwan to invest in its own defense systems rather than relying solely on external support.

A significant weapons package worth approximately $14 billion for Taiwan is currently under consideration by the U.S. administration. This proposal has garnered backing from lawmakers in Washington who recognize the urgency of Taiwan’s defense needs amid China’s expanding military operations in the vicinity. Yui argued that the scale of military assistance should correspond to the threat level, pointing to China’s frequent military exercises, naval deployments, and aircraft maneuvers near Taiwan as evidence of the growing pressure.

Yui reiterated Taiwan’s objective of maintaining its security and democratic values through defensive means. He stressed that the island’s defensive posture is crucial for preserving its autonomy and ensuring regional stability. The emphasis on self-reliance comes as Taiwan continues to strengthen its military preparedness in response to China’s assertive actions.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials have affirmed that Washington’s policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged, maintaining that supporting Taiwan’s security is a key aspect of bilateral relations. This steadfast position underscores a long-standing partnership, with both countries expressing confidence in their enduring alliance despite the regional tensions.
